Comments:
Lower section of reach does not follow VHD layer. The stream has been re-routed to enter another tributary, which then flows into the West Branch. The lower culvert has wooden planks in place within culvert to trap sediment for habitat and reduce high velocities. Upper end of reach becomes more step-pool like and bedrock dominated. It is only a short amount of reach. Therefore, did not segment. 6/25/10 - Mary Nealon revisited Longtrail tributary. The dominant bedform appears to be step-pool, although the lower part of the reach has some riffle-pool characteristics. The reach has good floodplain access up above and becomes more incised near straightened section. The section below the culvert (access road to Mansfield parking lot) has likely been relocated. There is a perched tributary in the location when the main channel likely was located at one point. A second cross section was assessed. This cross section was similar in terms of cross sectional area to the first cross section. The RAF was revised on the first cross section, and results in an incision ratio of 1.4. It apeared to be more incised than 1.4 below the culvert and less incised in the upper reach (good floodplain access). Phase 2 channel width was used to determine phase 2 confinement type because of the uncertainty associated with reference channel width (see phase 1 step 7).
