Comments:
Substrate is covered by iron oxide precipitate. Good vegetation is holding the banks. Not much bank erosion. Bankfull channel width is 2.5 times the reference channel width. The cross sectional area is high relative to the other Big Spruce segments. Width to depth ratio is low. The bankfull elevation may have been identified as too high in the field; however, a review of the cross section indicates bankfull is at an appropriate change in slope within the cross section. Even is the bankfull is lowered one foot, the width to depth ratio is still low.
There is a wide span bridge in this segment that is not a floodprone or channel constriction.
Circa 2005, a free fall culvert was replaced with a large span bridge. As part of this project, the banks were rebuilt and a step-pool channel was constructed after the the culvert was removed and the bridge was installed. Rocks were placed along the bank; however, the amount of rock on the bank is not much different than the natural channel. This upstream and downstream channel is naturally straight, and this section was not indexed as straightened.
Phase 2 channel width was used to determine phase 2 confinement type because of the uncertainty associated with reference channel width (see phase 1 step 7).
