The Burlington East Wastewater facility was hit by a lightning strike during the severe thunderstorms on Wednesday June 10th. At approximately 10:30 pm the PLC lost functionality. This caused the disinfection system to not dose correctly leading to an assumed disinfection failure. When staff arrived at the facility for the day they noticed there was a problem and immediately started to diagnose the issues. Full disinfection was returned by approximately 7:45 am. White the disinfection system was compromised, the disinfection pumps were not completely shut down. During this time it is estimated that up to 225,000 gallons of treated, not fully disinfected effluent entered the Winooski River. Staff took samples to run for E.coli. Those results were not available at the time of this posting. The plant's disinfection system is operational.
