Plant staff were on site and took action to prevent the release of solids. Staff used many methods to reduce the risk to human health such as increasing sodium hypochlorite doses to provide more disinfection, and using polymer and coagulants to bind the solids and help them settle better. As the flows subsided the plant returned to a more normal operating mode.

The main plant discharged up to 1.1 million gallons of treated and partial disinfected flow with an E.coli count of 1200 colonies per 100 ml. This was caused by the plant being stressed out by a suspected nutrient imbalance, which is causing problems with settleablility. The high flows brought on by rain cause a hydraulic surge disrupting some of the solids causing them to flow out in the treated water.
