Daniel's construction excuvated the discharge site where it was found that the 45 degree elbow had broken due to a frozen section of force main up stream. Brattleboro's utility department had parts to fix the elbow in stock so those were gathered.
To remedy the ice dam up stream the utility departments jet truck was used to jet the line up to a valve that we had closed before opening up the broken elbow. Once the ice dam was clear the valve was opened to insure that the flow had been restored which it had, so the new elbow was installed at this point.
After the elbow was replaced the hole was back filled enough to test the fix and the pump station was turned on to check for leaks. There were no leaks on the line through multiple pump cycles so the rest of the hole was backfilled back to original grade. The hole where the force main frozen was also filled in some more as well as relocating some of the concrete blankets to help insulate the pipe for the construction.

At 7:36am I received a call from Daniel's construction reporting that there appears to a be a sewer break right at our retreat pump station. Upon arrival there was a pool of liquid between the sewer wet well and dry well that contains the pump. Pumps were tested to show that the water showed movement once pumps were activated.
At this time the pumps were shut down and Houghton septic was contacted to come pump out the wet well and proceeded to pump out the wet well periodically throughout the day. As well as suctioning out the hole that the pump discharge had created.
Due to the upgrade of the pump station Daniel's construction had been working on the force main on Friday 1/19 where they cut a 25' section out of the force main and relocated it about 1' deeper to allow for running new manhole lines. Unfortunately even with the backfilling Daniel's did on Friday along with the concrete insulation blankets weren't enough insulation during this weekend's cold temps.
Daniel's dug down in between the wet well and dry well to get down to the force main where the leak originated. Once uncovered it was found that a 45 degree elbow had cracked and that is where the sewer water was being discharged out of. After calculating the discharge based off run times from Friday to Monday morning a total of 13500 gallons may have been discharged based on the time of the break which likely happened during low temperature night on Saturday. The calculated gallonage per day for the pump station this weekend was 13,500 which comes out to about 4500 gallons per day.
