A call was made to Champlain Water District (CWD) of water "bubbling out of the ground" at approximately 0900 on March 9, 2020. CWD investigated and determined it was not wastewater. The City of South Burlington responded and it appeared to be a low volume of probable wastewater flowing in the driveway at 5 Ethan Allen Drive into a snow bank from a probable crack in the line. The line is a force main from the Ethan Allen pumpstation to the Airport Parkway Facility . The pumpstation was turned off, the flow stopped, the South Burlington Water Quality tanker truck arrived onsite and began hauling wastewater from the pumpstation to the Airport Parkway Facility. DigSafe was called and South Burlington equipment was dispatched to dig/repair the line. An approximate 3"-4" horizontal crack was found in the pipe at a depth of approximately 8'. The storm drain is uphill of the snowbank but it is possible that wastewater entered the stormwater system from some curtain drains. The stormdrain was traced to a small tributary to the Winooski River and the violation was reported online. The stormwater line is close to 100 yards in length and may not have discharged to the brook.
